Now this is something very different indeed. Not without its big hitters of course - here comes Raspberry Beret - but a song like Condition of the Heart feels like a long way away from the Mario pop of earlier incarnations. I do think there is something genuinely psychedelic about it, something with far more in common with Arthur Lee than Saturday Night Fever. Still - it was obviously a gamble. Limited promo and no singles until the album had gained some traction, a bold move.

Raspberry Beret really is a song and a half. She walked in through the out door. And Pop Life, so recognisable to me now from the Life Without Buildings cover version. A great track no matter what. It certainly feels like this one had less of an impact in the UK. I remember it being nodded to by a few people though. I feel like this is an album I would buy if I saw a second-hand copy, where Purple Rain I want on 180gm vinyl.

Songs and colours. I can dig it.
