I was looking at the charts the other day for the first time in ages. Mogwai got the number one album, which was great even if I've never been a fan, but the chart rundown still defaults to the singles. I went through it and can honestly say I didn't recognise anything in the top 40. Not even an Ed Sheeran or a LKings of Leon or anything - all just "XXX feat YYY (Remix" and all the rest. And I appreciate this makes me sound like the oldest man who ever lived, but it seems to have happened so suddenly. It's just a completely different landscape. Is this a download thing? Or just a generational shift? Who knows.

And there's something about Reputation that has that really modern, bleepy, tuned effect to it, that just sounds so alien to me. I can appreciate stuff like Grimes, or even Rihanna, Ariana, all of that, it conforms to the rules of verses and choruses. Some of it just sounds like a noise though. And it makes me wonder how this music is being enjoyed. What are the listeners hearing, that I don't? I mean, this is truly into "What is The Beatles?" territory here, but even still.

Is there another revolution still to come? Punk, Acid, Britpop. Has there been anything since then, that I've understood anyway? Maybe, like so many other things, that ship has sailed. It would make me feel sad to think there was stuff going on I just didn't understand. But I guess that's what makes it appealling to the people who like it?
