This is recognisably Prince, and it has a consistency of style and tone that you could argue the debut lacked. It's still amazing to think how far away we are from the really big hits though - and this is '79, ancient history really. I was going to compare it to Off The Wall and it's amazing to think both albums were released in the same year. He's got an incredible ear, picking out the different parts, maintaining a groove without it turning into a jam.

I Wanna Be Your Lover does ring a bell, even though it was never a UK hit, peaking at 41. The real eyebrow-raiser is of course I Feel For You, which I know from the Chaka Khan cover. I think to be honest I did know it was a Prince song, but still amazing to hear it in all its skeletal glory.

It's a more assured record... maybe he'd got some of the desperation that first albums can bring out of his system. But there are still songs - Still Waiting for example - that sound more rooted in the sixties than the eighties. It has a doo-wop, milkshake charm, before it all got messy, controversial and purple.
