Children by their millions sing for Alex Chilton. It's interesting to think of Big Star as an influence for the Replacements, when there isn't that much obvious crossover with, say, TFC. Songs like IOU definitely owe something to the laid back swagger of Memphis, southern fired rather than flame grilled.

What's that song. Something to Du. A celebrated summer.

This all has a scratchier charm than Tim. But I have learned that the Mats are often a band who benefit from repeated listens, so perhaps there is a depth here which won't reveal itself straight away. And funnily enough it was recorded at Ardent, with Jim Dickinson no less. I wonder what Jody made of Alex Chilton. No need to ask AC what he made of it, given that he plays guitar on Can't Hardly Wait.

On Skyway that Radio City sound really comes through. Only a decade too early to be featured on the OC or HIMYM or something.

Can't Hardly Wait sounds far removed from the punk of Hootenanny, but strikes me as a great leap forward. An Ardent sound, for sure.
