Compilations are tricky. You either go down the Bee Gees route of 12 bangers that no-one can argue with, or down the boxed set, 12 CD, "everything plus a few we found behind the sofa" route. For a band with so little material, Joy Division seem very prone to the latter - Warsaw demos, b-sides, endless live tracks. Total actually works very well, I think - the biggest hits from Joy Division, and an illustration of how the metamorphosis to New Order took place.

And finally, it's a chance to hear Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere. And there's no denying they sounds incredible. I would have swapped Isolation for Disorder, but apart from that it's a great half dozen track overview. A place to start anyway.

Atmosphere still sounds relevant, contemporary. You could imagine it being on a Horrors album, say. Ceremony for me will always be Bowlie, Arab Strap coming down with a list, me and Kevin on the dancefloor. The best of times.

Add Age of Consent and Vanishing Point and you're away. Can't grumble though. This is vintage stuff. Long may then run.
