Obviously appreciating that it's horses for courses, this one has a way more immediate appeal to me than the supposed critic's choice of Let It Be. Straight off with Hold My Life it sounds impelling, urgent. And of course as you sweep through it you start to understand why bands like The Cribs are such big fans. This has something going for it.

It's also really, really clever. Swinging Party has a dark, twisted lyric filled with black humour but bursting with life at the same time, and it was also one that I was surprised to realise I recognised - thank you, Spotify.

The segue from Swinging Party to Bastards of Young is absolutely sublime. I think, looking back over the past eight months or whatever, this is pretty much the first time I've had a visceral urge to go out and buy a copy of the album. Which I will no doubt take care of in due course.

Left of the Dial comes through like a trashcan Springsteen, which I suppose is the point. This is a compelling listen.
