I made the mistake/non-mistake of listening to the title track first. This is much more like the Prince I know and love. The rest of the album... well, it's another soundtrack, isn't it? For another film I haven't seen. Sigh. Ah - interesting, it's a sequel to Purple Rain. Something about diminishing returns springs to mind. And it's New Power generation, not Revolution, a suitably Watchmen-esque transformation.

Interesting that it's almost more star-studded - George Clinton and Mavis Staples, among the roll-call. And Morris Day and the Time who I can only confess I know because of Jay & Silent Bob and, er, that's it. It feels like a story that has changed in the telling, from Prince writing an album for The Time, to Prince starring and singing in a sequel to Purple Rain. Thieves in the Temple I recognise, but the rest of it is pretty much new on me. 1990. Too busy with Suede and the Second Coming, perhaps.

I'm all about that title track though. Orchestral intro, strong riffs, soaring vocals. Bring it on.
