Instantly, there's something in this that brings me back into the fold. There's a humour back in the lyrics, a lightness of touch, and a broader palette of instrumentation. Maybe there's a hint of bitterness in The Man that harks back to some of the darker moments of Reputation, but overall it has a sunshine glow. Even the cover is a breath of fresh air.

No Sheeran on this one, which is already a clear step in the right direction. Interestingly it does feature the Dixie Chicks and Panic! At The Disco though. Are PATD still a thing? Are they retro now? Is this an ironic thing? I don't even know anymore. Jack Antonoff seems to have been the main dude on much of this. Interesting how he's still described as an "indie rock" guy - strikes me he's actually Taylor's songwriter who has a side gig keeping it real, but perhaps that's just cynicism.

Even on the opening, I Forgot That You Existed, you get the feeling that if it had been on one of the R albums it would have started with a blast of techno synths and pounding drums. It's a deft touch to start so cleanly. Lots of it (particularly The Man) sounds like it has started with Taylor, a drum machine, and a pad of paper. That feels a lot more indie than Jack Antonoff. The Archer almost has a Judee Sill vibe to the opening, affected, but not mutated, understated lyrics, no temptation to burst onto the dancefloor, glitter ball in hand.

This might be my favourite one so far.
