I was surprised that Louise had this one when we met. She never ceases to amaze me. The cool hologram cover is the 90s giveaway I guess. I definitely recognise the lead track, though I don't know if it's necessarily an album I've sat down to listen to. 1991. The year punk broke. A year of turmoil and sadness, thirty years hence. String theory.
Pretty incredible to think this was only really halfway through his career, though I'm not sure he ever truly hit these heights again. There were court cases, slaves, symbols and all the rest. The world stopped listening, but Prince just kept going, album after album. You have to admire that.
It's got that snap driven groove, very piano house. And the title track is a classic Prince ballad. Though perhaps more of an 80s tune than a 90s hit. Perhaps it feels a bit of an anti-climax (if you'll excuse the pun) to end here, but I think the hit to noodle ration is about to plumb new depths. It has been a real education, and I will definitely be buying one or two of these - CD, second hand or 180g I haven't decided yet.
