You wonder whether there's something here, having been lumped in with Big Star and co for so long, that sooner or later they decide just to go for it, lean into the curve. It's another subtle step forward though, and perhaps like XTC before them, the band have decided that they are happy enough just doing what they are doing on their own terms. No need to compete at the talent show.

It's definitely an easier-going vibe than previous albums. You can't imagine much pogoing going on to these tracks. That's a similar pattern to many others as well though, not least TFC. And just like Norman and co there's a country twang creeping in around the edges of Achin' to Be and others, that Memphis sounds gradually drifting north to Nashville.

Anywhere's Better than Here could almost be a different band, back to the twang and the snarl. The contrast works though. It's a line that gets repeated through rock history, right? The grass is always greener.

And for all that I'll Be You is touted as the big hit, it's not a song I recognise at all. It could easily be a Thrush Hermit song though, or perhaps a JPE track from Truthfully Truthfully.

I dunno. There's something about it that's just not quite sticking the way some of the others did. I would definitely go back to Tim or Hootenanny though. And still one to go, of course.
