There is something instantly more compelling about this. There's more going on, sonically, and perhaps the band had learned from the sparse, clinical feel of the debut. Even still, it doesn't have that rush, that pull that I had expected. When I think of similar bands, similar albums that are revered, or seen as important - the title track of The Queen is Dead, say - and this just seems like hard work in comparison. Perhaps I have finally found that band - where you had to be there.
And yet they obviously meant so much to so many. Perhaps a lot of that is wrapped up in what might have been, rather than what actually was. If I try to imagine where they would be now though, it is a tricky one. Still on the outside I think. None the worse for that. Outsiders are where it's at.
