I absolutely hadn't written off Sign o' the Times, but when The Cross came on I saw the whole thing in a completely different light. It definitely doesn't happen very often, but every now and then I will completely change my mind about something, a black olive moment, and like the sinner that repents, it makes the eventual outcome all the sweeter.
The obvious example is The La's, a band that for whatever reason I had zero time for in their heyday. I guess it was Oasis that made them click, at the same time I know I was a big fan by the time of 1994's Brighton Centre excitement. Looking back I have no idea how I could have got it so wrong.
Blueberry Boat is another classic, one we struggled with for several listens until, as we climbed through the Baja lowlands into the hills outside Ensenada, it all started to make sense. We never looked back, literally or metaphorically.
Finally, there's Elvis, not someone I ever hated, more an absence of love, and the sense that it was completely unimportant - it said nothing to me about my life. Standing at his grave in Graceland, with tears in my eyes, I realised that everything I truly loved I owed to this one man. It was a humbling experience.
I'm always open to new things. But I do know what I like.
