Unique is a word that's bandied around quite a lot, but Billie's vocals have got an idiosyncratic quality that has been often imitated but never equaled. Amy Winehouse had the colourful backstory, but never the actual raw talent, not to my ears anyway.
Hugh and Alison had I Get A Kick Out Of You (Hugh) at their wedding - it was too good a pun opportunity to pass up. I love the way this album starts to introduce more guitar sounds alongside the traditional orchestral elements. I suppose the point of torch songs is to be a late night, smoky bar kind of vibe, though it's a fine line not to meander into the soporific.
In terms of tone, it's still all very obedient, very much following the formula, albeit doing it in a supremely elegant way. I almost feel sorry for new people coming along today, trying to interpret stuff like this in their own style - it must be nigh on impossible.
